Unseen Threads brings together a collection of handwoven textiles and naturally dyed tapestries by Winston-Salem-based fiber artist Nicole Asselin that are acts of building abstract landscapes, geologic formations, and pathways. Using a minimalist color palette and soft-edged geometric shapes, at their core, these works are about process—they are weavings about weaving and textiles about textiles.
Inspired by the myth of the three Fates of Greek mythology, this series joins in conversation with the ancient story.
In the myth, destiny was controlled by the unseen hands of the Fates. Their job was to spin, weave, and cut the thread that runs through a person’s life.
The weavings in this collection are created using a technique called warp painting, the imagery is applied in an emergent process as the warp threads are advanced slowly on the loom. Playing with the concept of the continuous thread, this weaving practice opens pathways to play with “fate” and create woven structures that feel more improvisational than structured and pre-planned.
Unseen Threads asks us to appreciate the beauty of handcrafted textiles and allows a contemplative space to imagine the various choices an artist makes about when to continue the work or cut the thread.
