Free Open Studio Hours for WNC artists affected by Helene

We are heartbroken to see the catastrophic destruction caused by Helene, especially in western North Carolina. We’ve heard so many stories of artists who have lost everything–decades of work, important equipment, even their homes and workspaces. We’ve been brainstorming meaningful ways to help in the recovery stage and are announcing a new opportunity.

Sawtooth in Winston-Salem, NC, is offering free open studio access for Western North Carolina artists working affected by Hurricane Helene.

Artists are asked to fill out an interest form on our website, briefly telling us about their work, process, experience, and needs. Our Studio Directors will work to find a suitable timeframe between our scheduled classes and coordinate with the artist directly.

The interest form is available at sawtooth.org/studiorelief

Sawtooth School for Visual Art has 16 well-equipped, professional studios in our historic building in downtown Winston-Salem, and we will make arrangements to accommodate working artists between our scheduled classes and workshops.

With this program, many of our studios will be available to reserve for a half-day or full-day, free of charge, after a brief training and safety session with our Studio Directors. Our ceramics studio will also offer free electric and gas kiln firings for working western North Carolina artists who need these resources to finish their works. We are also exploring potential teaching and vending opportunities and welcome feedback and ideas from affected artists.

Studios with available open hours include ceramics, glass (fusing and slumping, lampworking, mosaics, and stained glass), metals + lapidary, photography (B+W Darkroom), printmaking, textiles (dyeing, sewing, and weaving), and woodworking (woodcarving, woodturning, and woodworking). Scholarships for Youth programs are also available.
