Since 1945, Sawtooth has been the Triad’s premier community art school, helping thousands of students and generations of artists unlock their creative potential, embark on new artistic journeys, and lead more fulfilling, creative lives.

As our mission resonates and our community continues to grow, so does our need for more space. In addition to our landmark downtown campus, we operate two fully equipped off-site studios near Wake Forest University. We also have a professional-grade wood-fired kiln pavilion—the only one of its kind within a two-hour radius—and maintain a robust calendar of community events to bring art to everyone in the region.

Our Downtown Campus

Most of our classes, workshops, exhibitions, and events take place in our iconic Sawtooth building in downtown Winston-Salem, a landmark structure for the city that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This building also houses our Marta Blades Shop, featuring work for sale by Sawtooth artists, along with our Eleanor and Egbert Davis Gallery and Redding Corridor Gallery. Intergenerational Center Studios

Sawtooth School for Visual Art is proud to be a founding partner of the Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness, also known as the Generations Center. This state-of-the-art community center spans 62,500 square feet and is located in Winston-Salem. Led by Senior Services, the center brings together 21 different organizations, including health service providers, cultural institutions, and local universities. This groundbreaking collaboration is the first of its kind, uniting various organizations under one roof to offer healthcare, facilitate intergenerational interaction, and provide arts-based activities for the community at large.

Sawtooth’s two dedicated studio spaces at Generations Center act as an extension of our Ceramics, Textiles, and Art + Wellness programs, with classes, workshops, and drop-in activities scheduled regularly throughout the year.

Wood-Fired Kiln Pavilion

Sawtooth’s Wood-Fired Kiln Pavilion is equipped with 1 train kiln, 1 wood-gas hybrid catenary arch kiln, and 3 raku kilns, all available for atmospheric firing. We host class firings almost every session, and routinely bring in visiting artists to share their expertise and tried-and-true techniques for working with this age-old process.

Sawtooth’s wood-fired kiln pavilion was made possible thanks to generous funding from the Windgate Foundation.

Our wood-fired ceramics program is currently paused as we move our kilns to the campus of Mixxer Community Makerspace in downtown Winston-Salem. Read more about the endeavor and how you can support by clicking here!
