Max Smith (he/him) is a retired executive with over 26 years of experience in compensation consulting, most recently with Willis Towers Watson. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Studies from Pitzer College and an MBA from Georgetown University. Max brings deep nonprofit governance experience from a decade of board service with the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina, including roles as HR Committee Chair and involvement in strategic planning, community partnerships, and policy oversight. Max learned about the opportunity to join the board through a conversation with Lauren. He is a passionate member of the Sawtooth community, having taken ceramics classes for several years, completed an internship in the Ceramics Department (October 2024–April 2025), and is a regular volunteer at special events and kiln unloadings. His connection to Sawtooth is personal and active. As a retiree, Max is eager to dedicate time and energy to help the organization thrive.
